The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May, attended the Mitsubishi World Challenge Cup on Friday 1st September on her visit to Tokyo. Β She watched Great Britain men take on Australia, in a game the Australian’s won 54-50, followed by meeting the players and staff of the British team.
The Mitsubishi World Challenge Cup is a new tournament being run by the Japanese Wheelchair Basketball Federation alongside partners. This year saw Japan compete against Australia, Turkey and Great Britain across three days, 31st August – 2nd September.
Australia won gold, after winning all their games, seeing off Great Britain 76-54 in the final, whilst Japan came third after a convincing win against Turkey, 75-39.
As Tokyo prepares to host the Paralympic Games in 2020, the sport received great support and generated lots of excitement from the general public.
