The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May, attended the Mitsubishi World Challenge Cup on Friday 1st September on her visit to Tokyo.  She watched Great Britain men take on Australia, in a game the Australian’s won 54-50, followed by meeting the players and staff of the British team.

The Mitsubishi World Challenge Cup is a new tournament being run by the Japanese Wheelchair Basketball Federation alongside partners. This year saw Japan compete against Australia, Turkey and Great Britain across three days, 31st August – 2nd September.

Australia won gold, after winning all their games, seeing off Great Britain 76-54 in the final, whilst Japan came third after a convincing win against Turkey, 75-39.

As Tokyo prepares to host the Paralympic Games in 2020, the sport received great support and generated lots of excitement from the general public.
