Turkey were crowned champions of the 2018 Women’s European Championships Division B with wins over Sweden and Italy.
In a three-way tournament, the title of the championships came down to the last game with Turkey needing the win over Italy to ensure the championship.
Sweden got the competition underway, in their first appearance at a major competition since 1991, coming back from an eight-point deficit to seal a 53-35 victory over hosts Italy.
In the next game Sweden matched up with Turkey, but it was Turkey’s experience that saw them outlast Sweden in the final quarter, going on a 17-3 run to secure the game, 45-33.
In the final game Turkey required a win to ensure they took the championships and also for a place in the Women’s European Championships Division A next year. Coming off the bench it was Turkey’s Naciye Çakir double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds who assisted Turkey to the 37-16 win over Italy.
