The city of Suphanburi in Thailand is set to host IWBF’s Women’s U25 Wheelchair Basketball World Championships between the 22nd – 30th May 2019.

This will be the third edition of the Women’s U25 World Championships, with the previous two being hosted in Beijing, China in 2015 and Toronto, Canada in 2011.

The decision to award Thailand the championships was made at the last IWBF Executive Committee meeting.

IWBF’s President, Ulf Mehrens said, “Thailand’s bid met all requirements, the country is developing a good reputation for hosting para-sport events, and they have great facilities. It will offer optimal conditions for the organisation of these championships and we are excited to host our first ever world competition in Thailand.”

Thailand have a successful track record for hosting international wheelchair basketball events and have already hosted the U23 Asia Oceania Championships as well as the Central and East Asia Qualifying Tournament for the Asian Para Games. Development of the women’s game in Thailand has been a high priority for them in recent times and they will also host the Asia Oceania Zone’s Women’s Development Camp in March next year for the second time.

Thailand’s Wheelchair Basketball Sports Association President, Phatt Krissana, said “The IWBF family have been to Thailand many times before and everyone knows our true passion for organising top-events. Hosting the IWBF U25 World Championships shows our commitment to developing our youth and female wheelchair basketball programmes in Thailand and we are delighted to be able to showcase the sport at a world level.”
