Germany’s U25 women’s team captain, Rebecca Lieb, will take part in her second U25 World Championship when she competes in the 2019 Women’s U25 World Championship in Suphanburi, Thailand.
The 22-year-old from Flensburg in Germany is one of the more experienced athletes at the competition with 14 years playing experience already, but the excitement of representing her country has not worn off:
“It’s always an honour to represent your country at an event like this. For me it is already the 7th year in the Under 25’s team, so for me personally I feel very proud to be part of this team for so long. At the same time, I’m very excited for my teammates who are playing in their first ever World Championship.
“I think it is very important to have a lot of experiences at a young age to help you grow as a player. You can learn so much from the more experienced players in your team but also in the other teams as well.”
This will be Germany’s third appearance at the Women’s U25 World Championship having finished sixth in Canada in 2011, and fifth in Beijing in 2015, and they will be hoping to climb further up the rankings at this year’s tournament.
Lieb, who plays for BG Baskets Hamburg, said, “We want to grow as a team at this tournament with our new team members and our new staff. Sports-wise our aims are to go through to the semi-finals and see how much we improved compared to the U24’s European Championship last year.
“I’m excited to see all the teams competing, especially the new teams, but I think Great Britain and the USA will play a big role in this competition.
“Most of all I’m looking forward to having a great competition, to have fun but also to play an amazing championship. I also look forward to see the families of my teammates in the audience who will be cheering for us.”
Germany’s opening game of the 2019 Women’s U25 World Championship will be against Australia at 16.00 on Thursday 23rd May.
