The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) have confirmed the qualification framework for Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
There will be places for six (6) men’s and six (6) women’s teams in the 3×3 wheelchair basketball competition Games, which is set to take place in Birmingham, UK between the 28 July until the 8 August 2022.
It is the intention that all IWBF Zones will host qualification events during 2021 to qualify teams for the Commonwealth Games where 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball will be included for the very first time.
The criteria also include the opportunity for development nations to be engaged, underpinning the role the Commonwealth Games has always played in recognising talent and supporting development.
IWBF’s President, Ulf Mehrens, said: “We are delighted to be on the schedule for such a prestigious event, particularly with the new discipline of 3×3. The Commonwealth Games has been an event we wanted to be involved with for many years and I thank everyone involved in both IWBF and the CGF for making this a reality.
“We believe that the 3×3 format will bring wheelchair basketball to more nations and more people and the transformation qualities the game possesses, which align with many of the values of the Commonwealth Games. We are sure that 2022 will be an incredible celebration of sport and wheelchair basketball is proud to be part of it.”
The framework and expression of interest form were circulated to all Commonwealth Games Associations (CGA) and National Organisations of Wheelchair Basketball (NOWB’s) with a deadline of 30 September 2020.
