The Menโs U23 European Championship gets underway on Monday 14 June and it will be the first international wheelchair basketball competition for national teams since the 2020 Afro Paralympic Qualifiers took place in March 2020 due to the hiatus the sport has had internationally because of COVID.
The Italian Wheelchair Basketball Federation (FIPIC), who were originally awarded the honour of hosting the Menโs U23 European Championship in the summer of 2020, have retained the hosting duties and the competition will take place over a five day period in Lignano Sabbiadoro.
About the Competition
The championship is the European qualification event for the Menโs U23 World Championship set to take place in Chiba, Japan next year.
Seven countries will fight for the U23 European title โ Turkey, Germany, Spain, Poland, France, Italy, and Israel โ with the top five taking the five qualification spots available for the U23 World Championship.
Reigning Junior European Champions Turkey were drawn in Group A with France and Israel; Germany, Spain, and Poland were drawn in Group B. Italy, as the host nation, chose to be placed in Group A. More about the teams.
How to Follow
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the championship will take place behind closed doors without spectators. However, it will be available to watch via live stream on IWBF and FIPICโs YouTube accounts.
