IWBF Europe has awarded the 23rd European Championship for Men and the 18th European Championship for Women – Division A – to the Netherlands Basketball Federation. After four years, the competition is returning to Rotterdam, Netherlands, as a combined event.
In August 2023, wheelchair basketball will be one of several sports that are planned in the first edition of the European Para Championships. 18 teams in total – 12 men’s and 6 women’s national teams – will take part in the 2023 European Championship. The goal will be the European Crown and the possibility of qualification to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
The European Para Championships is a multisport event. It will be staged every four years and will always be hosted by a major European city in the year preceding the Paralympic Games. In 2023, the European Championships of ten different parasports will be organized simultaneously in one host city, for the very first time. The inaugural edition will take place in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, from Tuesday 8 to Sunday 20 August 2023. At the event, 1,500 Paralympic athletes from forty-five different European countries will compete to become European Champions.
Twelve men’s teams split across two groups of six will compete in the 2023 European Championships.
In Group A, hosts Netherlands will face Germany, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, and Latvia. Whilst in Group B current World Champions Great Britain take on Italy, France, Austria, Israel, and Turkey.
Six teams will compete in the women’s competition of the 2023 European Championships: Netherlands, Great Britain, Spain, France, Germany, Turkey
The teams will play in a round-robin to determine the top four that make it through to the knock-out phase.
Rotterdam, the second largest city in the Netherlands, will host the inaugural edition of the European Para Championships in 2023. The main hub, and therefore the venue for multiple sports, is Rotterdam Ahoy. In addition to this exceptional world-class indoor location, the European Para Championships 2023 will also use various outdoor venues in the heart of Rotterdam. These ‘city center courts’ ensure that the parasports come to the people, instead of the other way around. In this way, the event presents unique parasports in a high-quality way to Rotterdam and its residents & visitors. This allows them to get acquainted with parasport of the highest level.
