The European Championships ‘A’ which took place in Worcester, England in September 2015 determined which European teams would be competing at the Paralympic Games in Brazil.
The University of Worcester Arena played host to 19 teams from across Europe, battling it out not only to be crowned European Champions, but also to gain the right of passage as qualifiers at the next Paralympic Games in Rio 2016
In the women’s competition seven countries competed, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Turkey, France, the Netherlands and Italy for four spots in Rio. It was current Paralympic Champions Germany who were crowned champions of Europe again after a 72 – 62 win over the Netherlands, whilst in the bronze medal game earnt their fifth consecutive European bronze medal 69 -39 over France. All four of these teams successfully secured their place at the Paralympic Games in Rio 2016.
In the men’s competition there was a rerun of the European Championships 2013 Final as Great Britain took on Turkey for Gold, it was the host who successfully defended their European crown beating Turkey 87 – 66. In the bronze medal game Germany defeated the Netherlands, 74 – 56, to take home bronze. Fighting it out for the final spot to Rio in the fifth place game Spain defeated Italy 86 – 55 to claim the final place for Europe at the Paralympic Games in Rio 2016.
