The Carioca Arena rang out with a packed crowd as Great Britain took on host nation Brazil in a fantastic Pool B encounter.

The first quarter saw Great Britain first to gain the advantage, but with Brazil never far behind; the GB Men just edging a 15-12 lead after 10 minutes. Brazil continued to test their opponents at both ends of the court, but Great Britain found a way through and extended their lead to eight points at the end of the half: 35-27.

The third quarter saw the battle continue: the GB Men narrowly taking the 10 minutes by 18-16 to head into the final quarter ahead by 53-43. In a thrilling final quarter, it was Great Britain who once again pushed forwards to close out a 73-55 win.

Great Britain’s top scorer Gaz Choudhry said: “It was really tough – Brazil played fantastic, they did a great job, really challenged us and it was a fun game. The crowd is absolutely amazing – tonight was really really special.”

Brazil’s top scorer Marcos Candido Sanchez said: “Great Britain played very well; of course we wish we had won, but tomorrow we’re going to try to win the next match.”
