In a very important Pool B game in the men’s event which decided which of three teams would book the two spots to the quarter finals, Brazil took on Germany.
The first quarter saw the game tied on 8 points apiece with just over seven minutes played, but from there Brazil’s shots did not drop and Germany capitalised around the paint to take the first 10 minutes by 15-8. A tense second quarter saw the host nation edge it by 19-18, Germany nevertheless entering half time up by six: 33-27.
Both teams found another level of play in the third, but it was Germany who held the advantage as they extended their lead to 54-45 with 10 minutes left on the clock. The fourth quarter was another incredibly intense encounter as the host nation closed the gap down to four points (61-65) with just over two minutes remaining in the game. The German team, however, then put on a stunning performance in defence and offence to secure a 71-63 victory.
The win for Germany meant Brazil and Germany claimed the third and fourth spot, respectively to claim a spot in the final 8 whilst sending Iran to the 9th/10th playoff game.
