IWBF Africa World Championship Qualifiers 2017 (#AWCQ2017) draw took place at Wheelchair Basketball South Africa Headquarters on Saturday 14th October 2017.
The draw was witnessed by print and radio media, Soweto TV, Broadcast Giant SuperSport, as well as syndicated TV provided by David Van der Sandt. IWBF Executive Board Member Craig Moorgas and Valentine Sargent, from the Auditing Company, verified the draw.
The opening games will take place on the 18th November 2017 at the Tongaat Indoor Sports Centre, City of Ethekwini, KwaZulu-Natal with hosts South Africa taking on Morocco in the first game of the tournament.
With only one spot for each (men and women) to represent the African Zone at the World Championships in Hamburg, Germany next year, there is a lot at stake.
In the men’s competition, there are eight teams split across two pools, whilst a pool of four teams make up the women’s competition.
South Africa’s men will face Morocco, Angola and Zimbabwe in pool A, whilst defending champions Algeria will take on Egypt, Nigeria and Ghana in pool B, before the tournament moves into the knockout stages.
South Africa women compete against Algeria, Zimbabwe and Nigeria.
The finals of the tournament will take place on the 24th November, where history will be made with the launch of the first ever 3×3 ActionBall Knockout Continental Challenge which commences the following day on the 25th November.
