In anticipation of the Wheelchair Basketball World Championships, set to take place in Hamburg, Germany in August, IWBF has confirmed the finalised schedule.
The world’s wheelchair basketball elite will meet from the 16th August to 26th August 2018 at the edel-optics.de Arena, where 16 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams will compete for the title of World Champions.
The women’s game between China and Argentina tips off the action at 09:00 (local time) on Thursday 16th August, with the opening ceremony commencing at 16:00, followed by hosts Germany men and women, taking on African teams Morocco and Algeria, respectively.
Australia men will open their campaign, to defend their World Championship title, against Argentina, whilst the women’s defending champions, Canada, will take on Great Britain.
The men’s pool phase, consisting of 24 matches, concludes on Monday 20th August, deciding the crossovers for the final 16. The women’s pool phase will take the top four from pool A and pool B to make up the quarter-finals set to take place on Thursday 23rd August.
On Saturday 25th August, the women’s competition will come to its finale with the gold medal game at 20:15. The competition schedule then concludes on Sunday 26th August with the men’s gold medal game taking place at 17:30.
IWBF Secretary General, Maureen Orchard, said, “The planning of the schedule can be very complex and intricate to ensure that there is a correct balance for all teams, but the release of it is always an exciting moment for the fans, the athletes and team staff.
With less than 150 days to go until the World Championships, the publication of the schedule builds up the anticipation and interest in the event.”
