Mexico’s Sergio Durand has announced his retirement as Secretary General of IWBF Americas after dedicating 19 years of service to the zone.
Remarking on his decision to step down, Durand said, “I have decided to retire as Secretary General of the American Zone of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation, since it is impossible for me to adequately fulfill all the functions that I have both as the IWBF Americas Secretary General and at the same time, the work I have as Secretary General of the Mexican Paralympic Committee (COPAME) as well as responsibilities of the Technical Direction of the Mexican Federation of Wheelchair Sports AC (FEMEDESSIR). Over this past year the work has increased a lot and I believe this is the right time for me to step down from IWBF Americas.
“Likewise, it is necessary to mention that during the more than 19 years in which I was working as IWBF Americas Secretary General, I felt totally supported by all the Presidents and Members of the Executive Councils that were in charge of the Zone. I have enjoyed this work, and my thanks go to all of them.”
President of IWBF Americas, Cristina Rosello, said, “On behalf of the Zone I thank Sergio for his great work during the last 19 years, we knew we had someone we could always count on. Sergio has been vital to the success of our Zone and we thank him for his dedication and are pleased that he will still be involved with wheelchair basketball through his role in Mexico.”
Stepping in to fill the Secretary General role for the interim period will be current IWBF Americas Treasurer and recently retired IWBF Secretary General, Maureen Orchard.
IWBF Americas will have a General Assembly during the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games in August at which time the member nations will elect a new Executive Council who will be responsible for appointing new commissions and deciding on the future of the Secretary General.
Rosello, added, “With the approval of the Executive Council of IWBF Americas I have asked Maureen Orchard to accept the position until August 2019 and she has agreed. IWBF Americas is fortunate to have someone of Orchard’s experience prepared to take on the job of Secretary General, I look forward to working with her.”
