Paralympic gold medallists USA men tipped off the wheelchair basketball competition of the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games with a commanding performance over Puerto Rico, 106–35.

USA women followed in the same style, starting their campaign to retain their Parapan American Games title, with a 92-10 win over Chile. USA’s Lindsey Zurbrugg finding herself shooting at 78% and top-scoring with 28 points.

Zurbrugg said: “It felt pretty good. It was kind of nice getting started and to be able to find my rhythm, just shooting and playing with the team. I’m happy with it.”

Not to be outdone, Canada women started strongly coming out with a decisive 83-6 win over Colombia. Kathleen Dandeneau and Arinn Young were two of four Canadians to reach double digits, scoring 21 and 20 points respectively.

The game between Mexico and Argentina in the women’s competition proved to be the game of the day. Led by Maria Pallares’ double-double of 31 points and 12 rebounds for the game, it was a convincing second quarter from Argentina as they blew Mexico away, 26-6, to create an advantage they did not let slip, ending with a final score of 63-48.

The day finished with more clear wins, this time for Brazil men and Brazil women over the hosts Peru. Despite a strong home crowd support, Brazil proved too much for the Peruvians to handle in both the men’s game and the women’s, as the men secured a 105–25 victory, and the women an 88-8 victory.

Lima 2019 Parapan American Games is the wheelchair basketball zonal qualification tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, with three men’s spots and two women’s spots available.
