It was a must win game for South Africa to keep their hopes alive of qualifying for Tokyo 2020. They started brightly and took a 12-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, as Algeria’s normally consistent shooting went wayward shooting at 14% from the floor.
Algeria’s head coach changed the line-up and turned on the full-court press forcing South Africa into a number of turnovers which gave Algeria easier looks at the basket. They won the second quarter 25-3, taking control of the game with a 12-point lead at half-time.
Despite South Africa’s best efforts to slow down the scoring of Algeria, they had found their rhythm and momentum cruising through the second half, 22-8 and 12-4, securing the win, 61-27, to book their place at a Paralympic Games for the second time in their history.
After a slow start, captain Djamila Khemgani found her shooting touch and finished with a double-double of 22 points and 11 assists being recognised with the Player of the Match for her efforts.
Although it is now known which team qualifies for Tokyo 2020, Algeria and South Africa will fulfil and play the two remaining games of the tournament on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th March.
