IWBF Europe Executive Council has issued a statement regarding the cancellation of EuroLeague due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) .
IWBF Europe Statement
IWBF Europe Executive Council has been watching very carefully the changing situation of the Coronavirus (CORVID-19) threat over the last few days.
It is well known that Coronavirus confirmed cases are in many places where EuroCup events are to take place, or where teams are coming from or travelling in. We have spoken to many national federations and government agencies. We have considered views and information from many teams, players and technical officials.
IWBF Europe focus is to protect the health and wellbeing of athletes, technical officials and wheelchair basketball community in this difficult situation. The situation moves fast and every day the news is more concerning.
The Executive Council of IWBF Europe has carefully considered the situation.
In order to protect our athletes and technical officials, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all planned EuroLeague and Champions League events for the weekend of 12 to 15 March 2020.
This decision is not easy but is made to protect our membership.
We will continue to observe the development of the Coronavirus threat in the coming weeks and months and make decisions on possibilities for some games to be played on other weekends when EuroCup Final rounds are planned.
We are sorry that this situation has become necessary.
IWBF Europe will be in contact with all affected teams, local organizing committees and technical officials with more information on next steps.
We thank you for your understanding and patience.
