The final qualification tournament for the 2022 IWBF World Championships will get underway in Sao Paulo, Brazil on 13 July 2022.

Seven men’s and eight women’s teams will compete in the 2022 Americas Cup in a bid to achieve qualification to the IWBF World Championships and be crowned Zonal Champion.

Hosted by the Confederação Brasileira de Basquetebol em Cadeira (CBBC) at the Centro de Treinamento Paraolímpico Brasileiro, the teams will battle it out across the preliminary round and knockout stages over 6 days of competition.

In the women’s division Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia and Chile will represent South America, Guatemala and Mexico will represent Central America and Canada and the USA will represent North America. These eight teams will compete for one of three spots in Dubai later this year.

In the men’s division, the late withdrawal of Mexico due to unforeseen circumstances has meant seven teams (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela representing South America, Puerto Rico representing Central America and Canada and the USA representing North America) will be playing for one of four spots.

IWBF Americas Secretary General, Maureen Orchard, said:

“We are excited to be able to get the Americas Cup underway, and looking forward to showcase the excellent wheelchair basketball talent this zone has to offer. On behalf of the Zone I would like to thank CBBC for hosting and making the Championship possible, and wish all the teams participating good luck.”

IWBF Official Supporter, PSF Chairman Fabian M. Teichmann said:

“We wish all the athletes at the IWBF Americas Cup for Men and Women in Brazil to get good team results and of course a boost of positive emotions at such a bright sporting event. We are happy to be a part of your family.”
