France and Japan have been awarded the rights to host the final Paris 2024 Paralympic Games wheelchair basketball qualification events for men and women, respectively.
It was announced at the postponed 2022 IWBF World Congress, which took place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates last week, that Fédération Française Handisport has won the rights to host the Paris 2024 Repechage Tournament for men in Antibes, France, and the Japanese Wheelchair Basketball Federation the rights for the Paris 2024 Repechage Tournament for women in Osaka, Japan.
Due to the reduction in team places at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, a new qualification system was introduced with the aim to ensure the fairest approach and that the best teams in the world are represented at the Games. The Repechage tournaments give a final opportunity for teams to qualify for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games that don't qualify through the Zonal Championships.
Four (4) men’s teams and four (4) women’s teams will qualify for the Paralympic Games through the Zonal Championships*, with the remaining four (4) places for men and women at the Paralympic Games coming from the repechage tournaments.
The repechage tournaments, which are planned to take place in April 2024, will consist of eight (8) men’s teams and eight (8) women’s teams.
The distribution of places for the repechage tournaments were determined by several factors including the final standings (below the top four placed teams) at the 2022 World Championships. The Zonal Championships will decide the countries who will participate in the repechage tournaments.
