The IWBF Players’ Commission was created to provide international wheelchair basketball players with a unified voice in the governance of the sport. Comprised of eight players, the commission ensures that athletes are represented at the highest levels of decision-making within the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF). It serves as a platform for players to engage with the IWBF and offer input on key issues affecting the sport globally.
The current members include Annegrit Brießmann (Germany), Hiroaki Kozai (Japan), John Boie (USA), Michelle Moganedi (South Africa), alongside the original four members of the IWBF Athlete Steering Committee – Ella Sabljak (Australia), Terry Bywater (Great Britain), Alhassan Sedky (Egypt), and Erica Gavel (Canada). This diverse group represents the four IWBF Zones, ensuring equal representation with one male and one female athlete from each region.
At the commission’s first formal meeting, Erica Gavel (Canada) was elected as Chair, and Alhassan Sedky (Egypt) was selected as Vice Chair, marking an important leadership step for the commission.
Initially established as a provisional body, the Players’ Commission was formally recognized as a permanent commission within the IWBF statutes during the 2023 IWBF World Congress. The Chair of the Commission now holds a voting seat on the IWBF Executive Council, solidifying the players’ influence in the federation's governance.
The commission will continue to be an integral part of shaping the future of wheelchair basketball, with staggered elections— the next one scheduled for 2025—ensuring ongoing athlete engagement and leadership.
