The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August 2026, returning 12 years after the city’s successful 2014 Games.

Glasgow 2026 will feature a 10-sport programme concentrated across four venues within an eight-mile corridor, ensuring an action-packed broadcast schedule across each day of competition and making the event accessible and appealing to spectators looking to enjoy the multi-sport environment and festival feel.

With over 500,000 tickets to be made available at a future date, there will be around 3,000 of the best athletes competing from up to 74 Commonwealth nations and territories that represent 2.5 billion people – one-third of the world’s population. Para sport will once again be fully integrated as a key priority and point of difference for the Games, with six Para sports included on the sport programme.

The sports programme will include Athletics and Para Athletics (Track & Field), Swimming and Para Swimming, Artistic Gymnastics, Track Cycling and Para Track Cycling, Netball, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting, Boxing, Judo, Bowls and Para Bowls, and 3×3 Basketball and 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball.

Overview of the 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball Qualification System for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

The qualification system for 3x3 wheelchair basketball at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games consists of three main pathways for teams to secure a spot:

1. Automatic Qualification – Host Nation
  • Scotland (CGA SCO), as the host country, automatically qualifies for one team in both the men’s and women’s tournaments.
2. Direct Qualification – IWBF 3x3 Zonal Qualifiers
  • A total of six teams per gender will qualify through zonal qualifiers organised by the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF).
  • The top team from each region secures a direct qualification slot:
    • Africa – 1 team
    • Americas – 1 team
    • Europe – 1 team
    • Asia Oceania – 2 teams (one from the Asia region and one from Oceania)
  • Qualifiers will be completed by April 13, 2026. If a zonal qualifier does not take place due to low participation, the slot will be awarded based on the 2025 IWBF 3x3 Open World Championship rankings.
3. Bipartite Invitation – Special Selection by IWBF & CGF
  • Two wildcard slots per gender will be awarded through a selection process involving the IWBF and Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).
  • Invitations will be based on factors such as regional representation, previous performance, and participation in CGF development programs.

Key Eligibility Criteria

  • Teams must belong to a Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) affiliated with IWBF.
  • Athletes must have an international classification with a confirmed sport class or a review status valid through 2027 or later.
  • All teams must confirm their participation by April 27, 2026.

Timeline

  • January 2025 – April 2026: Zonal Qualifiers take place.
