Friends, family, and colleagues from around the globe gathered in Bonn this weekend to honour the life and legacy of Norbert Kucera - a revered leader in international wheelchair basketball, passionate educator, and beloved conductor. The Resurrection Service and Memorial Reception reflected the breadth of Norbert’s influence, from basketball courts to concert halls, and the deep affection held for him by communities across continents.
The day began with a moving Resurrection Service and Blessing at the American Protestant Church in Bad Godesberg, Norbert’s hometown, filled with music he once conducted and tributes from all corners of his life. Deacon Winfried Müller welcomed guests from the worlds of sport, music, and education, offering reflections on Norbert’s life and legacy. Close friends Dorothee Schwüppe and Christian Florack honoured his advocacy and mentorship, while Bernhard Wißmann’s eulogy captured Norbert’s energy and his rare ability to inspire as a conductor, educator, and friend. Readings and music underscored his deep faith and love of harmony, closing with his choir (who reunited to honor their former conductor) performing “Thank You for the Music” — a fitting farewell to a life so richly lived.
Following the service, guests gathered for a Memorial Reception that brought together people from all facets of Norbert’s life. Long-time friends and colleagues from IWBF and the wider sporting world, musicians from Aloisiuskolleg, and guests who had travelled from as far as Australia, Canada, Mexico, and South Africa came together to share stories and cherished memories.
Tributes continued with a video message from IWBF President Ulf Mehrens, followed by heartfelt reflections from IWBF Vice President Walter Pfaller, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, and Norbert’s long-time friend and colleague Don Perriman. Each painted a picture of a man of integrity, sharp wit, boundless compassion, and the rare ability to bring people together. Cristian Roja, one of Norbert’s protégés and a close friend, delivered an emotional tribute that moved many to tears, capturing Norbert’s lasting impact on the sport — and on individual lives.
Norbert Kucera was remembered not only for his professional accomplishments, but for his empathy, his humour, and his unwavering belief in the people around him. As IWBF’s Charlie Bethel, who gently guided the memorial reception, summed up: 'We are all better thanks to Norbert Kucera.’
May he rest in peace.
