The final day of competition at the Kuala Lumpur 2017 9th ASEAN Para Games the medals for the main 5x5 competition were up for grabs.
In the first game, with Myanmar and Philippines level on points, the result would decide the bronze medal. Philippines got off to a quick start and opened up a 10 point lead before Myanmar pulled it back to 4 at the first break. A solid second period from Philippines gave them a 12 point half time lead.
A spirited third quarter from Myanmar reduced the lead to only 7 at three quarter time. This closed to 4 as Myanmar pushed for victory at the beginning of the fourth, but Philippines steadied themselves and hung on to win 49-41 and claim another bronze medal to go with the one they won in the 3 x 3 competition. Top scorers for Philippines were Macabenguil (18) and Escalante (14), and for Myanmar Myint Win led all scores with 20.
The Gold medal game was again between the undefeated teams from Malaysia and Thailand. Another slow and nervous start from Malaysia cost them as Thailand’s Pimkorn and Sripirom found range to go to quarter time with a 14 point break. From there Malaysia found their stride and matched Thailand, even closing the gap to 7 points at several times. However they were always playing catch up, and Thailand’s coolness under pressure and the solid shooting of Jumjarean at crucial times allowed them to control the tempo of the game and they were never really challenged for the lead.
Thailand ran out winners 70-56. Pimkorn (20), Sripirom (19), Nirat (16) and Jumjarean (11) spread the load for Thailand, while for Malaysia Azman (16), Freday Tan (15) and Hamzah (12) provided the bulk of their score.
