In the second women’s quarter finals, the winners of Pool A, Germany, played the fourth placed team of Pool B, France at the Rio Olympic Arena.
A strong opening quarter by the defending champions saw Germany dominate the play to take a 14-5 lead. The second quarter saw France find the basket, capitalising on some great teamwork; Germany, however, continued to push forwards to take a 34-16 advantage into half time.
The German side responded in the third: piling on the pressure at both ends of the court to enter the final quarter ahead by 50-19. With the momentum in their favour, Germany continued to capitalise in offense in the final 10 minutes, whilst also putting up a strong defence: the German team progressing in the semi final with a 76-28 win.
Mareike Miller, Germany’s top scorer with 22 points said: “We came out knowing that France was fourth in the other pool – someone that we have to be beat and should be able to beat, but at the beginning it’s always 0-0. We all knew how much importance the quarter final has and we came out with the energy that we needed to really come out strong. We had some mistakes, but we played really well as a team knowing that we really wanted to win this game.”
