The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) deeply mourns the passing of André Raes, a distinguished recipient of the IWBF Gold Medal Triad Award. We join with the community as we grieve the loss of a true pioneer in the world of wheelchair basketball.
André Raes, born in 1932, assumed the role of the first Chairman of the Basketball Section of the International Stoke Mandeville Games Federation (ISMGF) in 1973. In this capacity, he paved the way for the growth and recognition of wheelchair basketball on an international scale.
One of André Raes' most enduring legacies is the creation of the Wheelchair Basketball Gold Cup in 1973. Raes was the driving force behind the three Gold Cup Tournaments held efficiently in Bruges, Belgium, in 1973, 1975, and 1990.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, André Raes was awarded the IWBF Gold Medal Triad in 1994. This prestigious honor reflected the deep gratitude and respect the wheelchair basketball community had for the dedication and commitment Raes had given to the sport.
The IWBF extends its deepest condolences to André Raes' family and friends. Raes will forever hold a cherished place in the hearts of many and is etched in wheelchair basketball history.
