IWBF have disclosed the decisions from the first part of the second phase (Phase-2 / Part 1) of the classification reassessment process.
The classification reassessment process is part of IWBF’s ongoing work to become compliant with the IPC Athlete Classification Code to ensure the sport of wheelchair basketball stays part of the Paralympic movement, remains on the programme for Tokyo 2020, and gets reinstated on to the Paris 2024 programme.
In Phase-2 / Part 1 of the process, countries who have qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games submitted all remaining internationally classified players (that were not reassessed in Phase-1) to be reviewed.
372 players were submitted to IWBF for review by the IWBF Eligibility Assessment Panel, with the support of the IPC Classification Committee and Classification Management Team, and of those 372 players, 366 decisions have been rendered. 365 players have been deemed to be eligible and 1 player, who does not meet the International Paralympic Commitee's (IPC) eligibility requirements, has been found non-eligible. A decision is still pending for 6 players due to either the request for further medical documents or because of the difficulties COVID-19 restrictions are causing accessing medical professionals in their countries.
So far across Phase-1 and Phase-2 / Part 1, 504 players have been reassessed, 487 have been deemed eligible, 9 non-eligible, with 8 cases still pending.
The reassessment process is part of an agreed action plan IWBF is implementing to meet compliance, which also includes the process of finalising new Classification Rules with an updated minimum impairment criteria aligning to the IPC Athlete Classification Code.
