IWBF President Ulf Mehrens,
"On behalf of IWBF, I extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to Norbert’s family, friends, and loved ones. He was not just a colleague but a cherished member of our IWBF family. We were his family, and he was ours. His absence will be profoundly felt, and our thoughts are with those who knew and loved him during this incredibly difficult time.
"Norbert’s impact on wheelchair basketball went far beyond his role; he was a guiding force, always striving to elevate the sport and support those around him. He played a key role in modernising our sport’s structures, ensuring its growth, and strengthening its place within the Paralympic movement. His legacy will live on through the generations of athletes, referees, and administrators who continue to benefit from his vision and leadership. For all that he has given to wheelchair basketball, IWBF will forever be grateful. While we mourn his passing, we also honour the incredible legacy he leaves behind."
Norbert dedicated over most of his life to wheelchair basketball, shaping the sport with his expertise, leadership, and unwavering commitment. His journey began as an international referee in 1987, leading him to officiate at his first Paralympic Games in Seoul 1988. He later served as Chairman of the World Technical Commission, before taking on the role of IWBF Secretary General in 2018.
IWBF will share further details in due course on how we will honour and remember his incredible contributions.
