The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) have the released the updated version of the Official Wheelchair Basketball Rules (OWBR), effective from November 1, 2024. This latest version aligns with the most recent updates to the FIBA Official Basketball Rules, ensuring consistency across both platforms.

The IWBF Technical Commission, responsible for these revisions, emphasised a commitment to inclusivity and clarity in the updated rules. A significant change in this edition is the removal of gender-specific language. Throughout the OWBR and the Official Wheelchair Basketball Rules Interpretations (OWBRI), terms like “he/she” have been replaced with “they/their” to foster a more inclusive approach.

Another key adjustment pertains to the definition and handling of fouls. The new OWBR no longer includes the “throw-in” foul definition and related penalties. Instead, all contacts previously categorized under this rule are now covered by existing foul classifications, such as “personal foul” (Article 34) and “unsportsmanlike foul” (Article 37). This change simplifies the rules and ensures clarity for players, coaches, and officials.

All modifications in the updated OWBR are highlighted in blue to facilitate easy reference for those familiarising themselves with the changes.
