IWBF is saddened to hear of the passing of George Kouzas, a pillar of Greek Wheelchair Basketball.

A dear member of the IWBF family, George was Chairman of the Greek Wheelchair Basketball Federation for almost 18 years (January 1999 until December 2016), and an influential figure in driving the sport forward in his country. He was also Vice-Chairman of the IWBF Europe Executive Council between April 1999 to 2011.

George played a major part in the organisation of the wheelchair basketball competition at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games and was part of the Tournament Technical Committee for the Games.

Born on December 17, 1957, a graduate of the Merchant Navy School, he got involved with basketball and obtained a diploma in coaching. He served sport from various posts through the UCITS, the municipality of Athens and others, as well as the Chairman of UCEA for many years.

IWBF President, Ulf Mehrens, said “The passing of George means wheelchair basketball not only loses a fighter for the development of wheelchair basketball in Greece, but in Europe as well. George was responsible for the strong development Greece made in the late nineties which were grounds for their participation in the 2004 Paralympic Games.

"Our sentiments and thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. IWBF has lost a dear friend.”
