Respected Chairman of British Wheelchair Basketball, Malcolm Tarkenter, has stepped down following a successful 8 year appointment. He has handed the reigns to established board member Paul Hudson, who was elected to post following the sport’s AGM on Saturday 13 August 2016.
Paul Hudson, the General Manager of the English Institute of Sport (Sheffield), has previously held the post of Vice-Chair on the Association’s Board and Chair of the Performance Advisory Committee. He has also been influential in the GB team’s selection and training preparation ahead of September’s Paralympic Games, and will be representing British Wheelchair Basketball in Rio.
Martin Morton has been appointed as Vice-Chair. Martin, a member of the board for 4 years, sits on the Performance Advisory Committee, and brings to the role a lengthy prominent career in sport and events.
This new appointment provides the Association and the Board the opportunity to look towards the future of the sport within Great Britain and internationally. Upon the announcement of his new position as Chair, Paul commented “I am honoured to be elected to the post of Chairman. The Association is an incredible organisation and I intend to build upon the excellent foundations of my predecessor to support more and more people to participate in this dynamic sport and to educate and raise the public’s perception of disability sport.”
Silver-medal Paralympian Malcolm Tarkenter also shared Paul’s delight on hearing the news of his successor’s appointment and added “The last eight years have been an incredible journey, the sport has grown beyond any of our expectations and the nation has truly embraced wheelchair basketball. Although I am sad to be retiring from my post, I am delighted to hand over to Paul Hudson. His influence has been apparent since his appointment to the British Wheelchair Basketball Board. Paul’s sports, management and funding experience makes him the perfect appointment to drive British Wheelchair Basketball beyond the Rio Games and towards Tokyo.”
