In a final game at the II Para Central American Games Managua 2018, emotions ran high and the atmosphere was electric as the home fans got behind their team, as the Nicaraguan men were crowned champions of wheelchair basketball, beating El Salvador 60-44 in the final.
The match was very close in the first quarter, but the home side edged it slightly in their favour, 13-12. For the second quarter, the Nicaraguans extended their advantage to take a 33 -18 lead into the halftime break. Thanks to an effective offensive strategy and good defence in the third and fourth period, Nicaragua sealed the victory to retain their Para Central American Championships title won in 2014.
Aarón Cruz and Richard Hudson top-scored for the Nicaraguan team, accumulating 16 points each, while William Calderón scored 14 points for the Salvadorans.
In the bronze medal game of the tournament, Costa Rica defeated Guatemala 56-46 to take home the silverware. The Costa Rican team bounced back to their defeat against El Salvador in the semi-final to dominate throughout the bronze match with quarter scores of 14 – 7, 16 - 15, 14 – 10, 12 – 14.
Costa Rican’s Kenneth González led from the front top scoring with 26 points whilst for Guatemala, it was Juan Buch, who top scored with 21 points.
