In the first game of day two of the Women’s South American Championships 2017, the experienced Brazilian team continued to show their intent in this competition as their size and power proved too much for a less experience Chilean side.
Keeping the intensity high in both offence and defence throughout the first half, Brazil stormed out to a 52 – 4 lead, with identical quarter scores of 26 -2.
Brazil did not let up the defensive pressure in the second half and kept Chile scoreless in the third quarter, whilst adding another 22 points themselves pushing the deficit out even further. The final quarter continued in much the same fashion, providing Brazil with a comfortable win, 96 -8.
Seven Brazilian players registered on the scoresheet, but it was Silvelane Oliveira who led with 24 points, closely followed by Debora Costa with 22 points. For Chile, it was Daniela Algería and Luz Carrasco with 4 points apiece.
Second game of the day saw Argentina bounce back from their defeat at the hands of Brazil yesterday to secure a 51 – 26 victory against a gutsy Peru side.
Argentina came out strong with Mariana Perez scoring her 6 points for the game all in the first quarter, as she helped her team build a 16 -2 lead at the end of the first period. They spread the scoring in the second quarter and added another 13 points to their total whilst Peru had only one basket fall in reply, giving Coach Garcia’s side a 25 point gap going into the break, 29 – 4.
However, the Peruvian’s did not give up and came back fighting after the break, winning the third quarter 11 – 9. The gap was just too much to come back from though, and Argentina edged a tight fourth quarter by two, 13 -11, giving them the victory.
Top scorers for Argentina were Maria Pallares with 28 points, supported by captain Silvia Linari with 7 points. Peru’s captain Pilar Jáuregui led the scoring for them with a 17-point tally.
