Dear Members and the Wheelchair Basketball Family,

As we come to the close of an incredible 2024, I want to take a moment to reflect on the highlights and accomplishments that have united us in the spirit of our sport.

This year, the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games showcased the pinnacle of wheelchair basketball, captivating audiences worldwide both in person and on screen, with remarkable ticket sales and broadcast viewing figures. The unparalleled intensity, skill, and camaraderie made it a truly inspiring demonstration of what makes our sport unique and powerful.

For the first time ever, the Repechages were introduced, creating a thrilling qualification pathway and an exciting build-up to Paris. These events were a resounding success, adding drama and anticipation to the road to the Paralympic Games.

We also saw progress in women’s development, particularly at the Asia Oceania Championships. Building on years of dedicated work within the Zone and support from Citi and the Para Sport Programme, the introduction of the composite team provided new opportunities for female athletes and paved the way for greater growth in the women’s game.

At the same time, 3x3 wheelchair basketball gained momentum with competitions at the Zonal level in both Asia Oceania and Europe. This fast-paced format continues to energise players and fans alike, expanding the reach and appeal of wheelchair basketball and creating opportunities for smaller countries and developing nations.

We remain committed to being an integral part of the Paralympic Movement and to continuing our cooperation with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Our deepest gratitude goes out to our partners—Tissot, Molten, RGK, the People's Sport Foundation, and many others—for their invaluable contributions to the success of our events and initiatives. Not to mention, our partnership with FIBA continues to thrive under the shared banner of "We Are Basketball."

Looking ahead to 2025, we eagerly anticipate hosting the first-ever 3x3 Open World Championship in South Africa and witnessing the next generation of players compete at the U23 World Championship in São Paulo. These events will undoubtedly elevate wheelchair basketball to new heights.

As we celebrate the successes of 2024, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you—players, coaches, officials, volunteers, supporters, and fans. Your dedication and love for the game are what make this community so special.

On behalf of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation, I wish you all a joyous holiday season and a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year.

With warm regards,
Ulf Mehrens
