In group A of the women's wheelchair basketball competition at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, the Germany-Canada match-up can be seen as the game for a preliminary decision on who will finish the group stage at the top seed. Things looked good for Germany as they started into the last quarter with a 10 points lead. During the last 10 minutes, things got exciting once again at Ariake Arena. With heavy effort, Canada managed to cut Germany’s lead point-by-point and as Germany’s top scorer, Mareike Miller, fouled out with 2:38 on the clock it felt like the game might be at a turning point for Canada. In the absence of their go-to player, it was Anne Patzwald (8pts) and Maya Lindholm (6pts) who stepped up to secure Germany’s win.
Whilst Canada and Germany fought for the top seed in Group A, Australia and Great Britain suited up to see who will get the first win at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Being aware that winning is their only option if they want to advance to the quarter-final, the British team started strongly and did not let go of Australia until the end. With this unthreatened 38-75 Britain makes it to the knockout stage, whilst Australia will enter the classification rounds. In a team effort, it was Laurie Williams who deserves special mentions as she scored 18 and dished 8.
