The game schedule and tip-off times have been confirmed for the Men's and Women's wheelchair basketball competition at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
Wheelchair basketball will take place across two venues - in the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza from the 25 August until 29 August, and the Ariake Arena from the 26 August until the final medal games on the 5 September.
The opening day of the women’s competition promises to be an explosive start as current world champions, the Netherlands, face Paralympic champions, the USA, in Group B at 11:15 (JST) on Wednesday 25 August. This is followed by two exciting games in Group A as Great Britain, who are seeking their first medal at a Paralympics, play against three-time Paralympic champions, Canada, at 14:45, with hosts Japan taking on their Asia Oceania rivals Australia at 17:00, both teams returning to the Paralympic stage after missing out on qualifying for 2016.
On Sunday 29 August, the four final preliminary-round games for the women will take place to decide the standings for the groups and the teams who progress to the knockout stages.
The four quarter-finals will be played on Tuesday 31 August, the semi-finals on Thursday 2 September, and both the Bronze and Gold Medal games on Saturday 4 September.
The field in the men’s competition is extremely competitive, especially Group B with the top four finishers - Great Britain, USA, Australia, and Iran - from the World Championships in 2018 all drawn in the same group.
In Group A, Spain, who claimed silver in Rio 2016 and who will be looking to emulate their success a second time round, will open the men’s competition against Asia Oceania heavyweights Korea on Wednesday 25 August.
Hosts Japan start their campaign against Colombia at 20:30 on day two (Thursday 26 August) also in Group A. Another game to look out for in the men’s event is the re-run of the 2018 World Championship final between the USA and Great Britain in Group B which is set for Saturday 28 August at 17:00.
The group stages for the men will come to their conclusion on Monday 30 August with the champions of Africa, Algeria, taking on the champions of the Americas Zone, the USA, in the final Group B game.
The men’s quarter-finals will be played on Wednesday 1 September, the semi-finals on Friday 3 September, and to cap off what is sure to be an exhilarating two weeks of wheelchair basketball action, the Bronze Medal and the Gold Medal games will be take place on the final day of the Games ahead of the Closing Ceremony on Sunday 5 September.
