Spain will take on World Champions the Netherlands, with Germany facing Great Britain in the 2021 European Championships women's semi-finals

Great Britain bounced back from their disappointment yesterday of losing to Spain for the first time since 2007, at the 2021 European Championships in Madrid, to win the final game of the group stage, 53-40 over Germany.

It was all square after the first quarter as the teams matched each other 8-8, but the GB squad, despite both coaches and key members of their team missing, were able to take a seven-point lead into the half-time break as their defensive pressure kept Germany’s scoring threat of Katharina Lang out of the game. Although Germany brought the game back to six points with five minutes to play, GB only conceded two more points to close out the game. Robyn Love got a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds for GB, whilst Maya Lindholm hit 16 points for Germany.

In the battle of the bottom two teams, Turkey and France both came into the game looking for their first win. In a low scoring game with a high turnover count, it was the experienced Angelique Pichon who stood out between the teams, scoring over 50% of France’s points with a double-double of 26 points and 14 rebounds, as France got the win, 48-23.

The Netherlands made it a clean sweep of the group stages, with a 76-39 victory over Spain. The Dutch pair of Bo Kramer (23 points and 14 rebounds) and Mariska Beijer (20 points and 10 rebounds) dominated for the Netherlands as they won each quarter of the game. Vicky Perez top-scored for Spain with 10 points.

The win for Great Britain earlier in the day against Germany, and Spain losing their game meant that all three teams finished level on points in the group stage, so final placings in the group went on points difference in the games between the three teams. This concluded that GB finished second, Germany third, and Spain fourth.

With the group table finishing the way it did, it means the same lineup of games will take place tomorrow on Day 7 as they have today, on Day 6.
