The 2024 IWBF Men's and Women's Repechage tournament took a significant step forward as the highly anticipated group draw unfolded at the 2024 IWBF Asia Oceania Championship closing banquet. Don Perriman, IWBF Asia Oceania Secretary General, was responsible for leading the draw along with IWBF President Mr. Ulf Mehrens, who drew the balls to determine the fate of the participating teams.
Men's Repechage Groups Revealed:
The men's draw kicked off with Group A comprising Canada, Netherlands, and Iran, while Group B featured Colombia, Germany, and Morocco. Stephane Binot, the French Men's Representative, joined the ceremony online. In a strategic move, France chose to be placed into Group A, leaving Group B to be filled by the remaining paired team Italy.
Women's Repechage Groups Unveiled:
The excitement continued as the women's draw took centre stage. Group A emerged with Germany, Thailand, and Australia, while Group B featured Spain, France, and Canada. As hosts, Japan had the unique privilege of choosing their group. Japan's Head Coach , present at the banquet, chose Group B, leading to Algeria finding their place in Group A.
Road to Paris 2024 Paralympic Games:
Both the Men's and Women's Repechage tournaments are scheduled for April. The 2024 IWBF Repechage Tournament for Men will unfold in Antibes, France, hosted by the Fédération Française Handisport, from 12th to 15th April. Simultaneously, the 2024 IWBF Repechage Tournament for Women is set to take place in Osaka, Japan, hosted by the Japanese Wheelchair Basketball Federation, spanning from 17th to 20th April.
These tournaments mark the final qualification event for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, intensifying the stakes and raising the level of competition. As teams prepare to face off in April, wheelchair basketball enthusiasts around the globe eagerly await the thrilling matches that will determine the last four qualifiers in each gender for the prestigious Paralympic event.
